Resource Allocation Policies for Personalization in Content Delivery Sites

چکیده
Abstract One of the distinctive features of sites on the Internet is their ability to gather enormous amounts of information regarding their visitors, and use this information to enhance a visitor’s experience by providing personalized information or recommendations. In providing personalized services a website is typically faced with the following tradeoff: when serving a visitor’s request, it can deliver an optimally personalized version of the content to the visitor possibly with a long delay due to the computational effort needed, or it can deliver a suboptimal version of the content more quickly. This problem becomes more complex when several requests are waiting for information from a server. The website then needs to trade-off the benefit from providing more personalized content to each user with the negative externalities associated with higher waiting costs for all other visitors that have requests pending. We examine several deterministic resource allocation policies in such personalization contexts. We identify an optimal policy for the above problem when requests to be scheduled are batched, and show that the policy can be very efficiently implemented in practice. We provide an experimental approach to determine optimal batch lengths, and demonstrate that it performs favorably when compared with viable queuing approaches.

The ageing of the countries’ populations, and in particular the growing number of the very old, is increasing the need for long-term care (LTC). Not surprisingly, therefore, the financing of LTC systems has become a crucial topic across the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In the last three decades, various financing policies have been carr...

Recently, a number of federated distributed computational and communication infrastructures have emerged, including the Grid, PlanetLab, and Content Distribution Networks. In these environments, mutually distrustful autonomous domains pool resources together for their mutual benefit, for instance to gain access to: unique computational resources, multiple vantage points on the network, or more ...

Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) is a complex information system that provides designing, administrating, and improving the business processes. Task allocation to human resources is one of the most important issues which should be managed more efficiently in BPMS. Task allocation algorithms are defined in order to meet the various policies of organizations. The most important of these...
متن کاملA Multi Objective Fibonacci Search Based Algorithm for Resource Allocation in PERT Networks
The problem we investigate deals with the optimal assignment of resources to the activities of a stochastic project network. We seek to minimize the expected cost of the project include sum of resource utilization costs and lateness costs. We assume that the work content required by the activities follows an exponential distribution. The decision variables of the model are the allocated resourc...

Network caches are the storage centers in the supply chain for content delivery the digital equivalent of warehouses. Operated by access networks and other operators, they provide benefits to content publishers in the forms of bandwidth cost reduction, response time improvement, and handling of flash crowds. Yet, caching has not been fully embraced by publishers, since its use can interfere wit...
